Interactive Sculpture

Hybrid Collaboration was commissioned by Ingenuity Festival in 2012 and is an interactive sculpture that changes color through text messaging.

The base of the sculpture is cast aluminum and the flowers are cast glass. Each flower has a high-power RGB LED beneath it that changes color based on the text messages.

Viewers are instructed to send text messages with the words #red, #blue, #green, #purple...etc. and once the sculpture receives three of the same word it changes color.

My interest in this sculpture was the interaction that people would have with it, and I wanted to see if a socially isolating practice like text messaging could be subverted to actually create interactions between people.
